Bellingham driver arrested after report he pointed a gun at pedestrians
Police arrested a man after he allegedly threatened two people with a gun in Bellingham.
Reports indicate a 37-year-old man from Ferndale was driving a red pickup truck down an alley between North State Street and Railroad Avenue at high speeds around 11 a.m June 18 . Two people walking the same alley reportedly gestured to him to slow down, at which point he allegedly pointed a pistol at them and said “this is a real one,” according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department.
The two pedestrians took the threat seriously and called 911, Murphy said.
Officers found the truck parked in the 100 block of East Holly Street and the driver nearby, Murphy said.
A warrant was issued and officers seized the truck as evidence. Inside, police found an “AR-style pistol” with three regular magazines, one of which was loaded, a drum magazine, an optical sight and a black rifle bag.
The man was arrested on suspicion of felony harassment, a class C felony, and unlawful carrying or handling of weapons capable of doing bodily harm, a gross misdemeanor.
He was booked into Whatcom County Jail but has since been bonded out of custody. He had not been officially charged as of June 23.
