Bellingham police arrested two men Tuesday following a report of an assault and stabbing.

Officers responded around 11:36 a.m. in the 600 block of Dupont Street. When they arrived, they found a man with what appeared to be two stab wounds in his back, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department.

An investigation revealed the 39-year-old man was challenged to a fight with the two suspects. During the fight, the man allegedly had one of the suspects on their back when the other one reportedly stabbed him in the back, Murphy said. The other man also allegedly stabbed him in the back at some point during the fight.

Police applied first aid to the man who was stabbed until medics from the Bellingham Fire Department arrived. The man is expected to recover and has been taken to St. Joseph Medical Center, according to Murphy.

An officer noticed two men walking away from the scene. One of the men had blood on his hands, Murphy said.

The two men were arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, a class A felony.

Officers reportedly found a controlled substance on one of the suspects. Police said it is likely cocaine. He was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a gross misdemeanor.
