Two arrested after one early-morning shooting in Bellingham leads to another
One person was injured after two related shootings in Bellingham early Sunday morning, according to police.
Around 1:17 a.m., police received multiple 911 calls of shots fired in the 100 block of East Magnolia Street, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department.
An investigation revealed there had been two shootings within a minute of each other, Murphy said. Five men were walking near the intersection of Cornwall Avenue and Magnolia Street when a passing car shot at them, injuring a 37-year-old male.
The person who shot at them has not been publicly identified by the police, and no arrest has been made.
The five men ran through a parking lot toward Railroad Avenue after being shot at, and one of the men saw what he thought was the same car coming back. The man shot at the car, hitting it several times, Murphy told The Herald.
The vehicle was being driven by a Bellingham rideshare driver who was not involved in the initial shooting. The rideshare driver’s vehicle was damaged but he was uninjured, according to Murphy.
When police arrived in the area, they found a Honda with five men leaving the area. When police asked the male driver to pull the vehicle over, the driver fled the scene. Police chased after the vehicle with emergency lights on, Murphy said.
During the chase, police say a handgun was thrown from the Honda and was recovered by police from the road, Murphy said.
Around the 1300 block of North State Street, police conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Officers then directed the five men to get out of the vehicle. They discovered one of the men had a non-life threatening gunshot injury to his foot, Claudia said. The man was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.
Police identified a 19-year-old from Bellingham who they suspect fired the shot at the rideshare driver. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, a class A felony, and possession of a pistol by a person from 18-21 years of age.
The driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old from Bellingham, was arrested on suspicion of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree, a class A felony.
The other two occupants of the vehicle were a 17-year-old from Bellingham and an 18-year-old whose city of residence was not listed.
Those arrested had not been officially charged as of the morning of Monday, June 16.
