Bellingham police arrest suspect in 2024 knifepoint robbery at homeless camp
Bellingham police recently made an arrest related to a knifepoint robbery at a Belllingham homeless camp that was reported more than a year ago.
Officers stopped Nicholas William Toby, 36, for a bicycling violation around midnight April 10 and discovered there were two outstanding warrants for his arrest for allegedly robbing a man at knifepoint and threatening to kill him, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department
The man Toby allegedly had robbed told police he was in the homeless encampment behind the Walmart off of Meridian St. around 7 a.m. Feb. 19, 2024, when he walked Toby, who was outside of a tent. Toby reportedly said something to the man about how it was his fault he had been arrested for a prior incident, then pulled a knife on him, according to court records.
Toby allegedly demanded the man hand over his belongings, and when he didn’t, another man exited the tent, also armed with a knife, Murphy said.
Toby and his accomplice then allegedly assaulted the man and stole his identification, EBT card and cash, his mother’s PCA bus pass and his keys, according to court records.
Toby allegedly told the man that if he contacted police about the robbery he would come back and kill him, Murphy said.
Police have not publicly identified the second suspect. Toby has been charged with first-degree robbery and harassment in the form of threats to kill, both felonies.
He remains in custody at Whatcom County Jail.
