Suspect in custody after man stabbed during altercation near Bellingham winter shelter
A suspect is in custody after a man was stabbed three times near the Bellingham cold weather shelter in the 900 block of North Forest Street in Bellingham the morning of Tuesday, Jan, 21.
Police say two people were arguing inside the shelter the previous night, and the next morning when people were leaving around 8:21 a.m., the two men met again, and the suspect reportedly made threats, according to Lt. Claudia Murphy with the Bellingham Police Department. Police say one man picked up a metal pole to defend himself, and the suspect allegedly tackled him to the ground, stabbing him with a knife in the back, arm and ribs. Police learned about the incident from eye witnesses.
The suspect left the area on a bike, and police put out an alert for his description.
Around 12:30 p.m., BPD bike officers located a man matching the description in an alley between State Street and Railroad Avenue near East Magnolia. Officers took the suspect into custody, although a knife was not located.
The victim was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment, although the wounds appeared to be non-life threatening.
