Bellingham Police K9 team makes first arrest; suspect reportedly carrying a small sword

A new Bellingham police officer and K9 team logged its first suspect capture Monday night.

Police responded around 10 p.m. to an apartment complex on Studio Lane in Bellingham for a felony domestic violence protection order violation.

A report indicated the suspect, a 46-year-old male, was banging on windows at the protected person’s residence. When police arrived, the suspect was in the parking lot on a bike. He dropped the bike and left the scene on foot, according to Megan Peters with the Bellingham Police Department.

First responders secured the area and called for a K9 team to track the suspect. Officer Shaun Nelson and his partner, K9 Stella, arrived and tracked the suspect into the woods, down a trail and into another apartment complex.

Stella began alerting when close to a vehicle, telling Officer Nelson the suspect was nearby. Nelson soon found the suspect under the vehicle.

The suspect was then taken into custody without incident and arrested on suspicion of two counts of violation of a domestic violence court order. Police say a search of the suspect revealed he was in possession of a small sword.
