Parents charged with child assault after calling 911 to report infant son wasn’t breathing
The parents of a 5-month-old child have been arrested and charged with first-degree assault of a child after the infant was treated in the hospital for injuries consistent with shaking and/or and impact event.
The mother of the child, Genesis Salvador, 23, called 911 on Oct. 31 to report her child was not breathing. Medics responded and were able to get the male infant to start breathing again. The medics reported the child was having a seizure, and he was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center before being transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle as he showed signs of serious injuries, court documents state.
The child’s parents, Salvador and her husband Antonio Isaias Villalobos, 22, provided no explanation for how the child’s injuries could have occurred, according to court documents. Salvador told doctors the child was fussy when trying to sleep Oct. 28 and vomited Oct. 30 when trying to eat solid food for the first time.
The child has been placed in the care of Child Protective Services. He was released from the hospital Nov. 5.
In court documents, doctors say the child’s injuries were very severe, and he would have died if he had not been given medical attention.
The Seattle Children’s Center Safe Child and Adolescent Network (SCAN) team has stated concern that the parents have not provided an explanation for the child’s injuries, which are often caused by shaking, shaking with impact or an impact event, according to their doctors.
Salvador and Villalobos were arrested Nov. 24. and each charged with first-degree assault of a child, a class A felony.
