A man assaulted a 68-year-old woman with a metal pipe on Thanksgiving Day in Whatcom County, according to a Facebook post made by the Everson Police Department.

The woman had run to a neighbor’s house and asked for help after Shawn Evan Shoane Landden, 34, beat her after getting upset about an acquaintance bringing a Thanksgiving meal to the house, according to police. Landdon had been residing at the victim’s house for the last two months, Cody Barry with Everson Police told The Bellingham Herald.

The woman ran to the home of her former sister-in-law, Landden’s mother. Landden is the woman’s nephew by previous marriage, Barry said.

When police arrived at the scene they found the woman bleeding with injuries and reporting pain all over her body. She was later determined to have multiple broken bones and will be scheduled for surgery.

The woman told police Landden was last seen in her home on East Third Street in Nooksack.

Officers went to the address they were given, and before they could make an announcement, Landden came out the back and was taken into custody without incident. While officers were speaking with Landden, he reportedly spit in their faces multiple times.

Landden was booked into Whatcom County Jail for first-degree assault, third-degree assault and for an existing warrant (violation of a domestic violence protection order). He remains in custody.
