A Bellingham man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an alleged attack on his girlfriend, police said.

Police arrived at a home in the 1800 block of East Illinois Street in Bellingham following reports of an assault, around 9:38 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10. Police contacted Charles Anthony Quintanilla by calling him, while other officers prepared for him to exit the house.

Over the phone, Quintanilla admitted that he had harmed his girlfriend, putting both hands around her throat, choking her. According to Lt. Claudia Murphy with The Bellingham Police Department, Quintanilla indicated he planned to kill his girlfriend, but stopped when he saw her eyes lose focus.

During the phone call, Quintanilla said his girlfriend was fine now and he was putting ice around her neck.

When police told him to leave the house with his hands up, he complied and was taken into custody without incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault and is being held in the Whatcom County Jail.
