Fatal shooting, massive pileup close I-5 at Mount Vernon

A double-fatal shooting and a later multicar pileup closed part of Interstate 5 on Saturday, July 18.

The shooting did not appear random, according to early reports. While that was being investigated, a truck hauling gravel went through cable barriers, across the median and into the northbound freeway lanes. An estimated 23 vehicles were involved in that crash.
