Say it ain’t so, Joe! Bellingham’s Joe Martin Field broken into by thieves

It’s legal to steal second base, third base and even home in baseball, but when it comes to beer and ice cream, you’re going to have to pay.

Unfortunately, it appears at least one Bellingham thief wasn’t up on the rules of the game, as he or she made off with some refrigerated concessions from Joe Martin Field either late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Say it ain’t so, Joe!

Bellingham Police were sent to the baseball field at 2:12 a.m. Thursday, July 14, for the report of a burglary after stadium security found beer and ice cream strewn about near the field, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald.

The security person found the beer and ice cream had been stolen from two different refrigerators in the facility, Murphy reported.

It was unknown why some of the stolen concessions had been left behind — whether the thief took more than he or she could carry or was just in a hurry, Murphy said.

For the record, the Bellingham Bells, the primary tenant at Joe Martin during the summer, were in Ridgefield Wednesday and Thursday, but were scheduled to return Friday, July 15, to open a three-game homestand against Nanaimo.

No word on whether umpires — or their brothers and sisters in blue — will be able to toss the thief or thieves from the series opener, as Murphy said no suspect has been identified in the crime.

“Likely be on the lookout for someone feeling ill, as I cannot imagine beer and ice cream go well together,” Murphy joked.
