Man arrested for alleged attempted robbery of Whatcom County man

A man was arrested Friday after he and another man allegedly forced themselves into a Whatcom County man’s house and threatened to kill the man and his girlfriend.

Colby Lynn James, 26, of La Conner, was charged May 13 in Whatcom County Superior Court with first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree robbery and second-degree assault. A warrant for James’ arrest was issued the same day.

James was located May 20 by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office and arrested without incident, according to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deb Slater.

James is expected to make his first appearance in court Friday afternoon, May 20.

Around 6:30 a.m. on May 13, Whatcom sheriff’s deputies were called to a reported armed robbery in progress in the 5600 block of Guide Meridian. The suspects fled before deputies arrived, according to court records.

When deputies arrived, they spoke with a man who said James and an unknown man came to his house. The man told deputies he opened his door to check on his sister and saw James and the other man standing on the porch, records state.

The man told deputies he couldn’t close the door because James had his foot in the doorway. The man told deputies James and the unknown man entered his house and James said he was responsible for James’ vehicle being stolen and demanded money from him, court records show.

The man said his girlfriend told James and the unknown man to leave, and the unknown man pulled a silver handgun from his waistband and pushed the woman to the ground, the records state.

The unknown man then waved the handgun in the woman’s face and threatened to kill her and her boyfriend, according to court records.

James and the unknown man demanded what was in the victims’ pockets, but didn’t take anything, and then left the residence, the records state.
