UPDATE: Whatcom caregiver suspected of stabbing person he was caring for multiple times

A caregiver who reported he had a psychotic breakdown was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder after reportedly stabbing the person he was caring for multiple times.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office booked Joshua John McDonald, 29 of Bellingham, into Whatcom County Jail 12:03 a.m. Monday, April 25, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and third-degree malicious mischief.

Deputies were called at 11 p.m. Sunday, April 24, to the 5000 block of Hannegan Road for the report of a stabbing, sheriff’s office spokesperson Deb Slater told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

McDonald, who was the reporting person, stated he had a psychotic breakdown and stabbed the victim, who he worked for as a full-time caregiver, multiple times, Slater reported.

The victim reported seeing McDonald’s demeanor change after the assault when he stated he would call 911, Slater reported.

The victim was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham for treatment, according to Slater, who said she did not have an update on his or her condition.
