U.S. Border Patrol wraps up ‘busy’ week by stopping reported smuggling run into Whatcom

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a U.S. citizen Tuesday for reportedly attempting to smuggle an Israeli national across the U.S.-Canada border into Whatcom County.

“Yesterday, Blaine agents apprehended a smuggling load involving a firearm and an Israeli National who illegally crossed the border,” U.S. Border Patrol Blaine Sector Chief Patrol Agent David S. BeMiller said in a tweet Wednesday, Feb. 16.

The arrest was made Tuesday afternoon near Sumas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Jason Givens told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

The U.S. citizen, whose identity was not released, is facing criminal proceedings for allegedly attempting to smuggle the Israeli into the U.S., Givens reported, while the Israeli, whose identity also wasn’t released, is awaiting immigration proceedings.

The arrest came after “another busy weekend on the border,” BeMiller tweeted on Monday.

“Blaine agents apprehended 5 Mexican nationals and had multiple turn backs to Canada,” BeMiller tweeted.

That came after two more Mexican nationals were caught attempting to illegally cross the border on Feb. 10 in the Blaine Sector, BeMiller tweeted Feb. 11.
