Man hospitalized and suspected of DUI after Chuckanut Drive head-on crash
A 22-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence was hospitalized after he collided with two cars along Chuckanut Drive, including at least one head-on.
The Washington State Patrol was called at approximately 4:46 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, to the report of a collision that occurred near the Oyster Bar, Trooper Jacob Kennett told The Bellingham Herald Thursday, Jan. 27.
Before the crash, a State Park Ranger saw a silver Ford Mustang driving erratically southbound through Larrabee State Park, Kennett reported. The State Park Ranger attempted to stop the Mustang, but it reportedly sped away.
The State Park Ranger followed and came upon the a crash about a mile south of the park, Kennett said, after the Mustang had crossed the center line and struck two cars — a Subaru XV Utility and a Kia Soul.
“Apparently he was going through those curves too fast and crossed over into the other lane,” Kennett told The Herald.
The driver of the Mustang was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital and later to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, Kennett said, but there were not serious injuries to occupants in the Subaru or the Kia.
Chuckanut Drive was closed for approximately 3½ hours Wednesday while the crash scene was investigated and cleared, Kennett said.
Kennett said the Mustang driver was driving with a suspended license and was believed to be impaired.
