Bellingham man suspected in stolen car crash, allegedly tried to jump from moving ambulance
A Bellingham man suspected of crashing a stolen car while he was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, reportedly attempted to jump out of a moving ambulance on the way to the hospital.
The Washington State Patrol booked Jesus Enciso-Torres, 31, into Whatcom County Jail Saturday, Nov. 13, on suspicion of numerous charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle and DUI. Jail records show Enciso-Torres is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Troopers were called at 7:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, for the report of a single-car collision with a ditch along a straight portion of the Mount Baker Highway near Kelly Road, according to Whatcom County Superior Court documents.
When Troopers arrived, they noted Enciso-Torres outside the crashed Subaru Forester, documents state. When Troopers asked him what happened, Enciso-Torres reportedly said he did not know, as he was sleeping in the back of the car when the collision occurred.
Enciso-Torres refused medical attention and did not initially provide his ID to Troopers, documents state. State Patrol dispatch informed the Troopers that the car had been reported stolen in Bellingham and that Enciso-Torres had felony warrants for possession of a stolen vehicle and residential burglary.
After giving his ID to the Troopers, Enciso-Torres said he wanted to be checked by medics, according to documents, but he used the opportunity to attempt to run away, though Troopers managed to stop him.
Medics cleared Enciso-Torres, documents state, but he said his back hurt and wished to be taken to the hospital. Enciso-Torres also reportedly said he used narcotics earlier in the day.
Because Enciso-Torres was the only person at the crash scene, the keys to the car were found on the driver’s side mirror and the tow truck driver told Troopers that Enciso-Torres had told the tow company that he needed “his” car towed out of the ditch, Troopers told him they were arresting him for possession of a stolen car, according to documents.
Troopers followed the ambulance to Bellingham as it took Enciso-Torres toward St. Joseph hospital, documents state, and while it was nearing Woburn and Sunset, the Trooper saw Enciso-Torres get up and move toward the ambulance’s door. The ambulance was forced to stop, the driver got out, and the Trooper blocked both lanes and told Enciso-Torres to sit back down inside the ambulance.
At the hospital, the Trooper reported noting Enciso-Torres’ pupils were constricted, his eyes were bloodshot, he smelled of alcohol and he continued to be uncooperative, according to documents.
Troopers also found a loaded syringe with a substance believed to be heroin in Enciso-Torres’ backpack, documents state.
Court documents show Enciso-Torres also was wanted on a warrant out of Bellingham for an Oct. 29 shoplifting incident at the Lakeway Fred Meyer, when he reportedly attempted to steal $200 in groceries despite previously being banned from the store.
