Associated Press

Canadian authorities discovered and seized approximately $183,000 in crystal methamphetamine just north of Whatcom County’s border last week.

The meth was seized Oct. 11 at Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford, B.C., according to a release from Correction Service Canada.

The medium security prison is located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Sumas, according to Google maps.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors,” the release states, adding that CSC has heightened measures to prevent contraband from entering its prisons.

Meth has an average value of between $2,500 and $5,000 per pound, according addiction resource.net, meaning that the seizure was likely between 36 and 72 pounds of meth.
