Detectives are asking for help in their search for two men involved in sexually assaulting a hitchhiker near Acme on Saturday, June 13.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says a woman had been tubing on the Nooksack River with two other people Saturday afternoon before she became separated from her companions and was hitchhiking to her vehicle.
A red pickup truck driven by a man with a toddler was the first to pick her up. At some point that man dropped her off, and two other men picked her up. Those men drove an older, lighter-colored pickup truck that had an extra cab with a short box, according to the sheriff’s office.
The two men took the woman to a location near Acme around 3:30 p.m., and one sexually assaulted her. The other man “did not participate actively,” and is encouraged to contact law enforcement, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks.

Both of the truck’s occupants were described as white with a tan complexion, around 30 years old and wearing Carhartt jeans. One man was shorter, about 5-foot-9, had a neatly kept beard and weighed about 200 pounds. The taller man, around 6-foot-2, had a lanky build and short, messy, strawberry-blond hair.
Anyone with information about the truck, occupants or the assault is encouraged to call the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office at 360-676-6650. Also, if you have video surveillance that captures images of Highway 9 between Strand Road and Acme, the office is looking for footage between 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday to help identify the vehicle.
