Jury duty scams have been targeting residents in Whatcom County and across Washington in recent months.
A letter from Whatcom County Superior Court warned that citizens have been receiving bogus calls or emails claiming they have missed jury duty and a warrant will be issued for their arrest. The messages then demand a social security number or payment via a credit card to compensate for missed jury duty.
Many people across the state have lost large sums of money to these scams. The Whatcom court is advising residents to be cautious about giving out their information. The court will never ask for payment or personal information over the phone or via email following a missed jury duty session.
Anyone who may have received such scam calls should contact their local police. Questions about jury duty can be answered by the Whatcom County jury coordinator at 360-676-6779.
