Whatcom man twice eludes deputies in high-speed chases, but can’t get away third time
A Custer man who twice managed to avoid arrest in high speed pursuits couldn’t elude Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies when they located him without a car Friday afternoon while looking for a different suspect.
Arden Wayne Foster, 54, was booked in Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of numerous charges and warrants, including driving with a suspended license, attempting to elude police, DUI, assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. Jail records show that he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Deputies first made contact with Foster at approximately 3:15 p.m. March 18 when they stopped a car he was driving near the intersection of East Kelly Road and Guide Meridian for failure to have a front license plate, sheriff’s office spokesperson Deb Slater told The Bellingham Herald in an email. Foster also was found to have a suspended drivers license and multiple misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.
Deputies asked Foster to step out of the car, and he became argumentative, Slater reported. When he was told he was under arrest, Foster allegedly began to drive away.
While attempting to flee, a female passenger jumped out of Foster’s car, which was traveling between 30 and 35 mph, causing scrapes to her left arm and shoulder, Slater reported.
Deputies pursued Foster, but had to break off the chase when speeds exceeded 100 mph.
Nearly three months later on July 6, deputies spotted Foster’s vehicle and made a traffic stop near the intersection of Grandview Road and Portal Way, according to Slater. When he was asked to get out of the vehicle, Foster again reportedly put the car in gear and sped away.
Deputies later found Foster’s vehicle unoccupied, but could not find Foster, who is believed to have run away, Slater reported.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday, deputies were looking for another suspect in the 2600 block of Birch Bay Drive, when they found Foster in a bedroom, Slater wrote.
When he was told that he was under arrest, Foster refused and physically attempted to keep deputies from taking him into custody, according to Slater. He reportedly kicked one of the deputies in the knee before they were able to place him under arrest and book him into jail.
