Bellingham police have ‘one detained’ after closing Barkley Boulevard Wednesday

The Bellingham Police Department has one man in custody after it was forced to close Barkley Boulevard in both directions between Orleans and Woburn streets due to “police action ongoing” Wednesday morning, Aug. 19.

The closure was reported in a tweet by the department at 10:21 a.m.

“We are working to bring situation to peaceful resolution,” the tweet read.

Police on the scene called for a crisis negotiator, and at 10:37 a.m., unconfirmed emergency radio broadcasts said, “one detained at Barkley,” possibly signaling an end to the situation. Police on the scene at an apartment in the 1300 block of Barkley were also seen with a man, who appeared to be in custody.

At 10:52 a.m., the department tweeted that the “situation resolved peacefully with one in custody.”

The tweet went on to say that the road would be reopened shortly after City of Bellingham Public Works crews removed signs.

“Your patience is appreciated,” the tweet read. “Huge thanks to our patrol officers, tactical officers, detectives and crisis negotiators for their work.”

The department’s crime scene investigators remained on scene.

Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald that at this time police are only releasing that they were asking people to avoid the area as they attempted to peacefully end the situation.

Earlier unconfirmed radio broadcasts said police had set up a command post and called for an armored vehicle and a K9.
