Whatcom resident returns to find oven on, pizza on the counter and her car missing

A Whatcom County woman returned to her home west of Bellingham Tuesday afternoon to find the oven in her home on, a cooked pizza sitting on the counter and her Nissan Leaf missing.

The unusual burglary, which occurred in the 1500 block of Marine Drive west was reported at 1:15 p.m. July 28, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office incident log.

According to emergency radio broadcasts at the time, the woman reported finding her oven on and a cooked pizza waiting on the counter when she returned home.

She also reportedly noticed her Nissan Leaf missing, but then saw a man drive it past her house, according to radio reports.

The man then allegedly returned the car and told her he’d been in her house a couple of hours, according to the radio reports. The man, who was reportedly wearing a cartoon backpack, walked away.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson Deb Slater confirmed the radio broadcasts and said the man was contacted by sheriff’s deputies, adding that the resident did not wish to press charges and the man, who was believed to be transient, was given a ride to the Drop-In Center in Bellingham.
