Transient Bellingham man allegedly uses club 3 or 4 times in Drop-In Center robbery

Bellingham police arrested a transient man Tuesday they suspect hit another person three or four times with a bat or club during a robbery last week at the Lighthouse Mission Ministries Drop-In Center at Bellingham High School.

Phillip Bryan Woody, 56, was booked into Whatcom County Jail July 21 on suspicion of first-degree robbery and jail records show he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

At approximately 5:22 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, officers were called to Bellingham High for the report of a robbery at the Drop-In Center, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

The investigation determined that Woody used a club or bat to strike the victim three or four times in the torso before stealing a bag, Murphy reported.

The victim, who was taken to the emergency department at St. Joseph hospital for evaluation, was able to give a good description, allowing officers to identify the attacker as Woody, according to Murphy.

Woody was contacted by police at approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday in Maritime Heritage Park and arrested.
