Whatcom man suspected of raping child he knew two years ago

A Whatcom County man is suspected of raping a juvenile he was familiar with two years ago near Blaine.

William Coy Moots, 73, was booked into Whatcom County Jail on Thursday, July 2, on suspicion of first-degree child rape.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office received a report on April 4 of a sexual crime involving Moots and the juvenile that occurred two years ago near Blaine, spokesperson Deb Slater told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

After a two-month investigation, detectives established probable cause to arrest Moots for sexual assault, Slater said.

Moots turned himself into the sheriff’s office on Thursday.
