He allegedly wanted to see how easy it was to get away from Bellingham police
A man who said he wanted to see how easy it was to get away from officers, led Bellingham police on a chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph Monday night though the Birchwood, Sunnyland and Roosevelt neighborhoods and Interstate 5.
Karl Eugene Redmond, 51, was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of charges including attempting to elude police, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and a number of other outstanding warrants, and jail records show he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Officers attempted to stop a car Redmond was driving at 11:54 p.m. Monday, June 8, along Northwest Avenue, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald in an email, but rather than stopping, Redmond accelerated through a 7-Eleven parking lot and headed northbound on Northwest at twice the speed limit.
Redmond then turned right on McLeod Road and got on southbound I-5 and accelerated to more than 100 mph, before exiting at Sunset Drive and leading police down James Street on to Alabama, Nevada and Texas streets at speeds twice the posted speed limit with officers in pursuit, Murphy said.
Redmond then turned into an alley and ran from the car into a trailer, Murphy said. Police formed a perimeter around the trailer and negotiated for him to come out after a period of time, and he was arrested.
A passenger in Redmond’s car implored him to stop numerous times, Murphy said, and Redmond admitted he was trying to see how easy it was to get away from officers.
