Man allegedly attempts knifepoint carjacking from family in Bellingham drive-thru

A Bellingham man is suspected of attempting to carjack a vehicle at knifepoint from a family while they were at a Woods Coffee drive-thru on West Bakerview Road last weekend.

Bellingham police booked Daniel Tarelle Canzater, 25, into Whatcom County Jail Saturday, June 6, on suspicion of felony harassment, and jail records show he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Officers responded at approximately 1:23 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of West Bakerview for a report of a brandishing call with a knife, Lt. Claudia Murphy told The Bellingham Herald in an email.

While the family, which included a 6-year-old, was ordering in the drive-thru, Canzater approached the driver’s window of the car and said, “You know what’s up” and “Get out of the car,” Whatcom County Superior Court documents state.

Canzater then pulled a large, fixed-blade knife, Murphy said.

The driver put his window back up, and Canzater ran off, Murphy said, but he later returned in his own vehicle and attempted to confront the family again while they spoke to officers.

Canzater permitted officers to remove the knife he reportedly used to make the threats out of his car, and he was taken into custody, Murphy said.
