Ferndale man with child in car suspected of racing at speeds of 115 mph along Guide
A Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted a pair of Honda Civics racing at speeds reaching 115 mph northbound on Guide Meridian Monday evening, and one of the drivers had his girlfriend and 2-year-old son in the car at the time.
Chase Joseph Hoff, a 21-year-old Ferndale resident, was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of reckless driving and racing and was released on $2,000 bail early Tuesday, May 12, according to jail records.
The other driver, a 17-year-old from Ferndale who was not named because he is a juvenile, was cited for racing and released, Chief Deputy Kevin Hester told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
The two Civics were seen at approximately 8:30 p.m. Monday racing faster than 100 mph on the Guide near Smith Road, Hester reported. The deputy attempted to stop the cars, but they continued racing north and reportedly were clocked going 115 mph.
Other deputies responded and cut off the drivers north of Wiser Lake Road near the Nooksack River bridge, Hester reported. They cited and released the juvenile driver, but arrested Hoff after finding his girlfriend and their son in the car.
The gender of the child in Hoff’s car corrected May 15, 2020.
