Whatcom man injured in last week’s officer-involved shooting arrested by Lummi police

The man who was shot by a Lummi Nation Police Department officer during an investigation into a burglary last week has been released from St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham and arrested.

Kelton T. Lane, 23, was booked into Whatcom County Jail Saturday, April 25, on suspicion of first-degree assault, and jail records show he is being held without bail.

Lane was the suspect who was shot April 19 as Lummi officers were investigating a reported burglary, Police Chief Robert Wilson told The Bellingham Herald in an email Tuesday, April 28.

According to a Lummi release on the incident on April 22, officers located Lane at approximately 12:45 p.m. April 19 hiding in a recreational vehicle along Kinley Way. Officers entered the RV with the owner’s permission and reportedly found Lane non-compliant.

During their interaction with Lane, a single shot was fired by an officer, hitting Lane, according to the release.

Wilson told The Herald that Lane’s injuries were non-life threatening, as he was hit in the area of his elbow.

Officers administered first aid until an ambulance arrived and took Lane to the hospital, the release stated.

The Bellingham Police Department was called to assist with the investigation into the shooting, according to department protocol, the release stated, and all officers that were involved were placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.

“I hope to have a more comprehensive update within the next few days, when the agencies involved have completed their investigations,” Wilson told The Herald.
