I-5 traffic stop south of Bellingham leads State Patrol to discovery of meth, heroin
After making a traffic stop Sunday afternoon along Interstate 5 south of Bellingham, Washington State Patrol troopers discovered a man was transporting 233 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 147 grams of suspected heroin.
Bellingham’s Jeffrey Dean Peters Jr., 42, was booked into Whatcom County Jail March 23 on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute.
Troopers stopped a 2008 Chrysler 300 driven by Peters near milepost 248 for an illegal window tint and improperly signaling prior to a lane change, Tropper Heather Axtman told The Bellingham Herald in an email.
After receiving a search warrant for the Chrysler, troopers found the meth and heroin, Axtman said.
Methamphetamine costs an average of $80 per gram, while heroin costs $20 for a signal 0.1-gram dose, according to rehabcenter.net, meaning the drugs located in Peters’ car had an approximate estimated value of more than $48,000.
Whatcom County Superior Court documents show Peters is scheduled to stand trial beginning July 20 for multiple possession of a controlled substance and a community custody violation. Court records also show he has multiple felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance, witness tampering, participating in a prison riot, firearm possession, assault, burglary, possession of stolen property, taking a vehicle without permission and community custody violation in Skagit and Whatcom counties since 1996.
