Mustang driver leads State Patrol on 100-plus mph chase on I-5 in north Bellingham
The Washington State Patrol says it has no idea why a 22-year-old man led troopers on a short chase along Interstate 5 that reached speeds faster than 100 mph before ending in a single-vehicle crash north of Bellingham Monday evening.
“Other than he’s a 22-year-old male driving a Mustang Shelby, I really don’t know why he was going so fast,” Trooper Heather Axtman told The Bellingham Herald. “It wasn’t long, and thankfully, it sounds like he only crashed his car.”
Austin Jacob Ludwigsen was booked into Whatcom County Jail Feb. 24 on suspicion of attempting to elude police vehicles, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.
Troopers first saw the Mustang traveling in excess of 100 mph and using the shoulder to pass cars at 6 p.m. while traveling northbound on I-5 near the Bakerview exit, Axtman said.
But within three minutes, Axtman said the car had crashed and Ludwigsen was in custody without any major injuries.
