Two Whatcom County people were taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Bellingham for injuries they suffered in a suspected DUI single-car crash on Interstate 5 near Birch Bay Lynden Road early Sunday.
Marcus A. Wood, a 31-year-old man from Lynden, and Chian J. Vasser, a 22-year-old woman from Blaine, were both transported to the hospital after the 2006 Honda Accord Wood was driving attempted to exit northbound I-5 at exit 270, left the roadway and struck a Department of Transportation sign, the embankment and a tree, according to the Washington State Patrol release on the incident. The incident occurred at 12:51 a.m.
Drugs or alcohol are suspected in the crash, according to the release.
Wood will be charged with vehicular assault and DUI, the release stated, but Whatcom County Jail records show he has not yet been booked.
Wood was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the report, but Vasser was not.
