Ferndale man back in jail where records show he kicked out a window after last arrest

A Ferndale man is back in Whatcom County Jail, where court records show he did $3,500 worth of damage two weeks ago, after he was found with a gun and trailer deputies believe were stolen.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office booked Jacob Steven Dezarn, 39, into jail Friday, Jan. 31, on suspicion of second-degree illegal possession of a firearm, second-degree possession of stolen property and possession of a stolen firearm.

While in jail after being booked Jan. 17 on a fourth-degree assault warrant, Dezarn kicked and shattered a large window in his cell, resulting in approximately $3,500 in damage, according to Whatcom County Superior Court records. Dezarn reportedly told corrections deputies that he was “frustrated” and was trying to get deputies’ attention.

A week later, on Jan. 25, Dezarn was released from jail.

Thursday night, deputies were sent to the 6100 bock of Olson Road in Ferndale after a resident reported finding a blue Ford Explorer with a blown right front tire and a trailer parked in their driveway, according to the probable cause statement provided to The Bellingham Herald by Chief Deputy Kevin Hester.

Inside the Explorer, deputies found the vehicle paperwork, showing it belonged to Dezarn, according to the statement. Deputies also reportedly found that the trailer had been reported stolen Dec. 3 and did not have the correct license plates on it.

Deputies spoke to Dezarn at his Ferndale home, the statement said, and he admitted to driving the Explorer and to have been in possession of the trailer since early December. Dezarn reportedly told deputies he thought the trailer may have been stolen.

Deputies also saw a gun near where Dezarn was sitting, according to the statement, and he said he had purchased it from a friend three or four months earlier. A check of the gun showed that it was stolen.

Dezarn was scheduled to be arraigned for second-degree malicious mischief for that incident on Friday, court records show. He also is scheduled to face a jury trial April 13 for a charge of first-degree robbery of a deadly weapon from a 2017 incident.

Court records show Dezarn has Whatcom County felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance, residential burglary and first-degree possession of stolen property from 2012 and 2013.
