She opened her Ferndale home last Christmas Eve, but he allegedly stole her jewelry

A Ferndale woman, who opened her home to a family member on Christmas Eve last year, reportedly found that her family member stole nearly $8,000 worth jewelry from her.

Simon Peter Veliz, 48, remained in Whatcom County Jail on Monday, Dec. 23, after being booked there Thursday, Dec. 19, on an outstanding warrant for suspicion of first-degree theft.

Ferndale police responded Dec. 25, 2018, to the 5600 block of Malloy Avenue for the report of a theft, according to Whatcom County Superior Court documents.

The victim told police that she had allowed Veliz to spend the night on Christmas Eve, “as it was Christmas,” documents said. But she and Veliz had an argument and Veliz left.

After he departed, the victim discovered that two rings and two chains worth approximately $7,755 were missing, according to documents.

Veliz was the only other person in the house at the time, documents said, and the victim said she received a message from Veliz’s girlfriend stating he was trying to sell the rings.

Veliz, was in the Monroe Correctional Center until Nov. 15, and court records show he has multiple previous felony convictions in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties for failure to register as a sex offender, communicating with a minor for immoral reasons, theft, burglary, assault, forgery, possession of stolen property, theft of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, harassment, malicious mischief and robbery since 1993.
