Bellingham Municipal Court building evacuated after reports of natural gas smell

The Bellingham Municipal Court building was evacuated Monday afternoon due to the smell of natural gas inside the building, according to a tweet by the Bellingham Fire Department.

Fire crews were called to the building at 2014 C Street at 1:21 p.m., according to the PulsePoint app.

Streets around the building also were closed, according to the tweet.

Captain Dave Pethick told The Bellingham Herald that the odor was reported throughout the building, but firefighters could not locate a source.

According to emergency radio traffic at 1:47 p.m., people were being allowed back in the building.

A follow up tweet by Bellingham Fire at 2:15 p.m. said the court was “back in business” and that streets in the area had reopened.

Cascade Natural Gas and Facilities Management were attempting to find the cause of the odor, the tweet said.
