Whatcom homeowner believed money was missing, so he set up a surveillance camera
A Whatcom County housekeeper is suspected of stealing $2,200 in cash from the owner of the house she was cleaning after the homeowner set up a surveillance camera and allegedly caught her in the act.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office booked Amy Marie Record into Whatcom County Jail Tuesday, Dec. 3, on suspicion of second degree theft, and jail records show she was released Wednesday on personal recognizance.
The homeowner noticed approximately $2,000 missing from a hiding spot in the home, according to information provided to The Bellingham Herald by Chief Deputy Kevin Hester. The homeowner reportedly suspected Record, who was working as the family’s housekeeper, and set up a camera to record evidence of a theft.
Between 9 a.m. and noon Monday, Dec. 2, Record was alone in the house to clean it, Hester said, and after she left the homeowner counted the money in the hiding spot and found that $200 was missing. He then reviewed the video footage, which reportedly showed Record accessing the hiding spot and taking money.
Deputies contacted Record, Hester said, and once she was confronted with the evidence, admitted to stealing a total of $2,200 on two occasions.
