Wind tips sailboat on Lake Whatcom; no one injured
Heavy winds on Lake Whatcom tipped over a sailboat Monday afternoon, though its two occupants suffered no injuries.
The 15-foot boat fell on its side about 150 yards off Dellesta Point in Agate Bay, just before 3:30 p.m., said Battalion Chief Mitch Nolze with South Whatcom Fire Authority. Nearby boaters rescued the two people inside the boat and their belongings before crews arrived, Nolze said.
Strong winds forced the boat’s sail mast into the water and possibly into the ground underneath, Nolze said. It was too windy Monday afternoon to retrieve the boat, he added, and a private contractor would come back later.
