Weight of garage door caused Bellingham woman’s death, autopsy says

The weight of a malfunctioning garage door killed a woman who was found underneath it last week, an autopsy has found.

Catherine Preston’s sister found her pinned underneath the garage door at the 67-year-old woman’s home along 32nd Street. Her sister called 911 just after 9 a.m. Thursday, May 19.

Gary Goldfogel, Whatcom County medical examiner, said Monday, May 23, that an autopsy last week determined the death was an accident. The door’s spring was broken, Goldfogel said, and Preston was using the door’s motor and lifting the door by hand.

The door apparently fell on Preston as she tried to lift it open, he said.

Goldfogel said he didn’t know how long Preston had been under the door before she was found.
