A crash at the Whatcom County line left one man dead Saturday, May 21, when his pickup hit an abandoned truck on the side of the road.

Thomas Gerard Werda, 52, of Concrete had been driving a blue Nissan pickup north on Interstate 5 on Saturday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Just after he passed the exit to Nulle Road, his truck drove onto a paved shoulder where it crashed into a red Dodge Dakota around 12:35 p.m.

Werda died at the scene, according to the state patrol.

Both trucks were totaled. The Nissan came to a rest on its passenger side in a ditch. The ’92 Dodge spun and blocked the northbound on-ramp from Nulle Road.

The Dodge had been tagged as abandoned around 5 a.m. Saturday, and would have been towed away soon, said Sgt. Mark Francis of the state patrol.

State troopers continue to investigate why Werda’s truck left the road. No obvious skid marks were found at the scene, Francis said.

Werda wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Troopers don’t suspect alcohol or drugs factored into the crash.
