Two Bellingham men hurt in head-on Mount Baker Highway wreck

Two people were hospitalized following a head-on crash on the Mount Baker Highway on Sunday afternoon, March 27.

Calvin R. Shillington, 27, and James C. Peters, 43, both of Bellingham, were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph hospital after the crash, which occurred about 12:20 p.m. at milepost 40, near Nooksack Falls. Both Shillington and James were listed in stable condition Sunday night.

Peters was a passenger in Shillington’s westbound 1996 Volkswagen Passat. It was struck head-on by a 2006 Ford F-350 pickup driven by Ryan P. Ford, 20, of Sumas, who was uninjured, according to Washington State Patrol.

Ford is facing charges in the crash, according to a Washington State Patrol report on the incident that said the cause was improper lane use. Ford was driving the pickup east toward Mount Baker but was traveling in the westbound lane.

Both vehicles were destroyed. All vehicle occupants were wearing their seat belts, according to the collision report.

The passenger’s name and which vehicle he was in were incorrect in an earlier version of this story.
