Southbound I-5 closed at Birch Bay-Lynden Road Tuesday night

Crews will close all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the Birch Bay-Lynden Road overpass near Blaine Tuesday night, Feb. 9, as they continue to repair the damaged bridge.

During the five-hour closure from midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday, vehicles will use the Birch Bay-Lynden off-ramp and immediately get back on the interstate using the on-ramp to bypass the closure. There will also be occasional single lane closures on I-5 near the overpass daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the rest of the week.

Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews are replacing a 60-foot girder on the bridge, and the repairs are expected to be completed in early April. The overpass was damaged last spring when it was hit by an excavator being carried on a flatbed truck.
