Wind gusts knock out power, topple trees in Whatcom County

Strong, gusty winds caused power outages across Whatcom County on Friday afternoon, Feb. 5.

More than 1,700 customers lost electricity in Ferndale and west of the city, in an area roughly between Slater and Thornton roads, according to Puget Sound Energy. The utility posted a 5 p.m. estimate of when power would be restored.

Another 300 or so homes on Lummi Reservation in the Lake Terrell Road area were without power as well. Those, too, had a 5 p.m. restoration time, according to the PSE outage map.

Smaller outages were reported along Chuckanut Drive, North Shore, around Maple Falls, off Tower Road, off H Street Road between Blaine and Lynden, and near the Bellingham airport.

The official wind gauge at Bellingham airport recorded gusts as strong as 48 mph, though other areas were reporting gusts exceeding that.

A tree reportedly fell into a house off Golden Valley Drive in the Peaceful Valley area. Power lines also were reported down shortly before 4 p.m.
