Service Feb. 20 for former Sen. Harriet Spanel

A funeral Mass for former state lawmaker Harriet Spanel of Bellingham will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Church of the Assumption, 2116 Cornwall Ave. A reception will follow.

Spanel died at home Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the age of 77. She served three terms in the House of Representatives and four terms in the Senate, representing the 40th District from 1987 to 2009. She served as caucus chair for Senate Democrats her last decade in office.

Widely regarded as hard-working and well-informed, Spanel was interested in such issues as the preservation of environment and natural resources, women and children, education, transportation and responsible government. A former Bellingham planning commissioner, she was active in the League of Women Voters, neighborhood groups and many other civic and government organizations.

Service arrangements are by Westford Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to one of her favorite causes, including the Dr. Leslie Spanel Memorial Planetarium Endowment, c/o Western Washington University Foundation, Whatcom Hospice and Whatcom Land Trust.
