Cathy Watson has been appointed to the City Council seat vacated by the city’s new mayor, Jon Mutchler.

Watson, a council member whose own term expired at the end of 2015, was one of seven candidates vying for the position. Four of six council members selected Watson on Monday, Jan. 4.

Mutchler, a City Council member, was elected Ferndale mayor in the 2015 general election, beating Watson. Mutchler’s term on City Council didn’t expire until Dec. 31 2017, so the council selected a new member to serve the rest of the term.

Watson is a retired NASA meteorologist and aerospace engineer.

Two other candidates — Michael Jolly and Victor Boulos Jr. — received one vote each.
