Whatcom County residents split on Obama’s gun control measures
Whatcom County residents shared their thoughts on President Barack Obama’s announcement Tuesday, Jan. 5, to expand and bolster background checks for gun buyers and to push for smart technology to improve gun safety.
Obama unveiled his plan Tuesday to tighten control and enforcement of firearms in the U.S., using his presidential powers in the absence of legal changes he implored Congress to pass.
These comments were posted on social media in response to a Bellingham Herald solicit for people’s opinions.
“There is nothing being presented in these new guidelines that doesn’t meet the most basic criteria of common sense. It is tragic that our elected officials in Congress could not pass what are, in effect, very basic gun laws. More than 200,000 Americans have died from domestic gun use in the past decade. Today’s actions are a very small step in curbing that catastrophic number.”

“Why cant people understand that anyone can buy a gun on the black market. Laws are for those of us who obey laws, criminals will NEVER obey any law?
“What law will stop a criminal? Murder is against the law, how many murders do we have every year?”
Alicia Cobbs
“A crying Commander in Chief should really put the fear of God into the terrorist now.”
Richard Fits
“Moronic.”
Danny Whitford
“He’s an out of touch liar. No clue. Nothing that will help the situation.”
