What’s open, closed on New Year’s Day in Whatcom County

Most larger retail stores and restaurants will be open New Year’s Day, though some will have shortened hours. Some places also will close early on New Year’s Eve.

Some small businesses will be closed for the Friday Jan. 1, holiday, so call ahead to check.

Public schools and local colleges remain closed for holiday break.

Here is the status of some common places Friday. If you’re in doubt about the status of a business, call ahead.

GROCERY STORES

Haggen: Regular hours.

The Markets, Cost Cutter, Food Pavilion: Regular hours.

Albertsons: Regular hours. Pharmacy open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fred Meyer: Regular hours.

Safeway: Regular hours. Pharmacy open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Winco: Regular hours.

Community Food Co-op: Stores open at 10 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Trader Joe’s: Closes at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1.

Everybody’s Store: Regular hours.

OFFICES, SERVICES

Whatcom County offices: Closed.

Bellingham city offices: Closed.

Bellingham parking meters: Not enforced Jan. 1.

Whatcom County Library System and bookmobile: Closes at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31. Closed Jan. 1.

Bellingham Public Library: Closed.

Banks: Closed, though most online banking will be available.

U.S. Postal Service: Deposit mail in blue boxes early on Dec. 31 because many will be emptied ahead of normal schedule. Post offices closed Jan. 1 and no mail delivery.

Garbage: SSC and Nooksack Valley Disposal will pick up trash as scheduled Friday; trucks might be earlier than normal. SSC office and the recycling/transfer station at F and Roeder streets closed. Recycling and Disposal Services, 4916 LaBounty Drive, open.

Whatcom Transportation Authority: No buses running.

The Bellingham Herald: Offices and customer service closed Jan. 1 and 2. Regular newspaper delivery.

Opportunity Council: Closed.

Boys & Girls Clubs: Closed.

STORES, RESTAURANTS

Bellis Fair: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some stores and restaurants with outside entrances have longer hours.

Retail stores: Most open, but some smaller stores will be closed. Call ahead to confirm.

Restaurants: Most open. Call ahead.

ENTERTAINMENT

Casinos: Open.

Movie theaters: Open.

Whatcom Museum: Closes at 5 p.m. New Year’s Eve. Closed Jan. 1.
