Air stagnation advisory issued for Whatcom County

Local air quality could worsen over the next few days. An air stagnation advisory was issued for Whatcom County effective Thursday night, Nov. 26, according to the National Weather Service.

High pressure is forecasted to trap colder, denser air near the surface, creating a period of poor ventilation that could allow pollutants such as wood smoke and exhaust to collect. The situation often is worse in the Columbia Valley area than other parts of the county.

Air quality is expected to gradually degrade as long as the stagnation persists. The advisory runs until noon Monday but could be extended.

People with respiratory illnesses should follow a doctor's advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution.
