Haggen gets court approval to sell 47 stores
A bankruptcy court has approved the sale of 47 Haggen stores, including 11 in Washington.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware officially approved the store sales on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Haggen held an auction earlier this month for the stores, with 55 receiving bids. In the original announcement about the 55 stores being auction, the amount of the sale was for more than $47 million. The sale of all 55 stores were subject to lease negotiations, so eight lease negotiations were not completed.
Albertsons purchased 10 of the 11 stores in Washington state, with Yoke’s Foods Inc. buying the Liberty Lake store. According to the initial auction results:
▪ Stores in Everett, Shoreline, Port Orchard and Renton will wear the Safeway brand, as will the store near Spanaway and in Gig Harbor.
▪ Stores in Burien, Renton, Puyallup and Milton will become Albertsons stores. Safeway merged with Albertsons earlier this year.
The next major step of this Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the proposed sale of the 32 core Haggen stores, including five in Whatcom County. A hearing to discuss this potential auction is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4. A number of objections have been submitted to the court, including one from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. If the auction of the core stores does move forward, it is scheduled to take place on Jan. 8.
