The Western Ferns?
Some students at Western Washington University want to change the university’s Viking mascot to something more inclusive, according to a story in The Western Front. One student’s suggestion: the Western Ferns, because they’re plants and nonviolent.
Adoption Day
Nov. 20 was National Adoption Day. Whatcom County held a special ceremony of adoptions Friday morning to mark the occasion. Judge Charles Snyder, Mayor Kelli Linville and Whatcom County Executive Jack Louws were on hand, and gifts were given to the families.
Peter Wagner of KGMI was there as well.

Fattening Friday
Nov. 20 is also National Peanut Butter Fudge Day. Really, we needed a day just for one flavor of fudge? I did learn today that it is widely believed that fudge was first created in the 1800s when a batch of caramels didn’t turn out quite right. If only all my cooking mistakes ended so well.
Ranker retains Senate position
Sen. Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas Island, will retain his position as the No. 2 Democrat on the Senate Ways & Means Committee that controls the vast majority of state spending.
“I am honored to have been selected by my colleagues to serve in this critical role,” Ranker said. “While many bills shape the values of our state and our local communities, few bills have the impact on those values that the budget has.”
Ranker also chosen to continue his role on the Senate Energy, Environment & Telecommunications Committee.
