Take a hike

No, really, you should. The American Hiking Society says Nov. 17 is National Take a Hike Day. (Clearly the folks who concocted this for mid-November didn’t live in the Pacific Northwest.)

Speaking of hikes, check out these four hike-inspired beers in the Beers Made by Walking event Nov. 21.

Pack a shoebox for kids

Grab a shoebox. Fill it with a toy, school supplies and hygiene items for a particular age group. Drop it off at one of four locations across Whatcom County. From there it will be sent to a child in need as part of Operation Christmas Child sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse.

Ferndale hires public works director

Ferndale has hired Kevin Renz as the city’s new public works director. Renz was previously the Solid Waste Division Manager in Skagit County.

Phony trooper scam

The Washington State Patrol says scammers have been posing as representing the agency’s trooper association and soliciting donations. The Washington State Patrol Troopers Association never asks for credit card numbers or personal financial information over the phone. If you suspect a scam, hang up and call the local WSP office. Also, the state Attorney General’s Office keeps a scam webpage.
