Ferndale businesses close Monday after water main break

A broken water pipe in downtown Ferndale forced several businesses to close Monday, Nov. 16.

An employee at the Subway restaurant on the corner of Third Avenue and Main Street in Ferndale noticed water leaking from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit at 6 a.m. Monday, said Dustin Benson, the owner of the Dickey’s franchise in Ferndale.

City workers determined that a water pipe that leads into Dickey’s broke overnight. The broken pipe belonged to the private owner of the building, not the city, said Ferndale communications officer Riley Sweeney.

Benson said all the businesses in the building — including Subway, Luxe Thai Cuisine and AllisonAmy jewelry — had to shut down Monday morning as the building’s water supply was shut off.

Subway was able to reopen later in the day, but Luxe Thai Cuisine remained closed Monday night.

Workers were cleaning up the water damage inside the building Monday. The extent of the damage was still being determined, Benson said.

Benson said he hopes Dickey’s will reopen Tuesday, but he wasn’t sure that would be possible. The Dickey’s restaurant in Lynden remains open.
